Wrist pain can stem from various factors, ranging from accidents to chronic and ongoing conditions. In my practice, I frequently encounter the following common disorders:

  1. De Quervain's Tendinosis: This condition causes pain on the thumb side of the wrist. The pain may develop gradually or suddenly, radiating along the length of the thumb and up the forearm. Activities such as making a fist, grasping or holding objects, and turning the wrist can be painful. De Quervain's tendinosis occurs due to irritation or inflammation of the wrist tendons at the base of the thumb. Repetitive activities and overuse often contribute to this syndrome.
  2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: One of the most prevalent nerve disorders in the hand, carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain in the palm and specific fingers, as well as the wrist and forearm. Symptoms may include weakness, tingling, and numbness. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage composed of bones and connective tissues at the base of the hand. In this confined space, the median nerve can become compressed by inflamed tendons or other swelling. Carpal tunnel syndrome is particularly common during and after pregnancy.
  3. Arthritis: Arthritis is a prominent cause of hand pain. It involves the deterioration of joint cartilage, which impairs smooth movement between joints. As cartilage wears away, painful swelling occurs, sometimes leading to significant discomfort and limited functionality. Arthritis frequently affects areas such as the base of the thumb, middle joints of the fingers, or the end joints closer to the fingertips.

These disorders can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. It is crucial to seek appropriate diagnosis and treatment to alleviate pain and improve hand function. In my practice, I employ various therapeutic approaches, including acupuncture, manual therapy, and other modalities to address the underlying causes of wrist pain. Treatment plans are tailored to each individual's specific condition and may include lifestyle modifications, exercises, and ergonomic recommendations.

Early intervention and comprehensive care can help manage symptoms, reduce inflammation, restore joint mobility, and enhance overall well-being. If you experience persistent wrist pain or suspect any of these conditions, I recommend seeking professional evaluation to receive proper guidance and personalized treatment.
